If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from creating UGC, it’s that great content does not need to come with a huge price tag.

‍

When I first started, I definitely had moments where I thought I needed a better camera, more equipment, prettier backdrops and basically an entire content studio before I could create anything that looked professional. Spoiler: you really don’t.

‍

Over time, I’ve learnt that making UGC look polished, creative and brand-ready has far more to do with how you use what you already have than how much money you spend. So, whether you’re just starting out as a UGC creator or trying to level up your current setup without your bank account giving you the side-eye, here are some of my favourite ways to do it.

‍

Your phone is probably all you need

‍

Let’s start with the most important piece of equipment: your phone.

‍

Despite all the cameras, lenses and fancy equipment you might see creators using online, my phone is still what I use to create the majority of my UGC. Modern smartphones are incredibly capable, especially when you combine them with good lighting, thoughtful framing and a little editing.

‍

Before spending hundreds on a camera, take the time to learn how to get the most out of the one you already have. Experiment with different angles, use the back camera when possible, play around with exposure and pay attention to what’s happening in the background of your shot. And one very simple tip that makes a surprisingly big difference: clean your camera lens before filming.

‍

You can always upgrade your equipment later, but you absolutely do not need to start there.

‍

DIY your setups

‍

This is where UGC gets fun. Some of the most creative content doesn’t come from an expensive studio setup. It comes from looking around your home and thinking, “What can I make with this?”

‍

If you don’t have a tripod, a stack of books, a shelf or another sturdy surface can work perfectly well. If you need a backdrop, try a bedsheet, curtain, blank wall, rug, kitchen counter or even the floor.

‍

The same goes for props. Before ordering anything, have a proper look around your home. Glasses, plates, books, mirrors, flowers, beauty products, food and everyday objects can completely change the look and feel of a shot. You don’t necessarily need more stuff; sometimes you just need to look at the things you already have a little differently.

‍

Learn how to use natural light

‍

Good lighting can make even a very simple setup look instantly more polished, and luckily one of the best lighting sources is completely free: the sun! Try filming near a large window rather than directly underneath a ceiling light. If the sunlight feels too harsh, move slightly further away from the window or soften it with a sheer curtain.

‍

It’s also worth experimenting with different times of day. Bright daylight can work beautifully for fresh, clean product shots, while golden hour can give lifestyle content a warmer and softer feel.

‍

The goal isn’t always to make your footage as bright as possible. It’s about understanding where your light is coming from and how it affects the overall shot. Once you start paying attention to lighting, you’ll notice just how much of a difference it makes.

‍

Make the most of free editing tools

‍

Once you’ve filmed your content, you definitely don’t need expensive professional software to edit it. There are plenty of free or affordable tools that give creators everything they need to produce strong short-form content, and CapCut is an obvious favourite for a reason. You can trim clips, add subtitles, adjust colour, clean up audio, add text and create polished edits without having to learn complicated professional editing software.

‍

Good UGC editing should make your content easier and more enjoyable to watch while still keeping the natural feel that makes UGC work in the first place. If you want to go deeper into that, have a read of our guide to UGC editing dos and don’ts too.

‍

Learn before you spend

‍

Probably the biggest money-saving tip I can give you is this: learn first, buy later.

‍

It’s very easy to convince yourself that your content would instantly improve if you just bought another light, tripod, microphone or camera. Sometimes new equipment will help, but very often learning a new filming technique will make a much bigger difference. There are so many brilliant free resources available through YouTube, TikTok, creator communities and blogs, so make the most of them.

‍

Pay attention to how other creators frame their shots, look at how ads are edited, practise different hooks and study content you genuinely enjoy watching. Instead of simply thinking, “I like this video”, try asking yourself why it works. Browsing different UGC ad examples can be particularly useful here. Look at how creators use lighting, framing, hooks, product shots and editing, then think about how you can apply those techniques in your own way.

‍

The more you understand about lighting, framing, storytelling and editing, the easier it becomes to create better content with whatever equipment you have. And, of course, you can always explore the rest of Twirl’s UGC Diaries for more creator tips, guides and resources without spending anything.

‍

So, do you really need an expensive UGC setup?

‍

Not at all. Creating high-quality UGC on a budget is mostly about being resourceful with what you already have and learning how to use it well. Your phone can be your camera, your window can become your lighting setup, your books can double as a tripod and your home can become your studio.

‍

As your creator business grows, there may be equipment that genuinely makes your life easier or allows you to create certain types of content more efficiently, but don’t feel like you need to own everything before you can start creating great UGC.

‍

Learn to make the most of what you already have first, and you might be surprised by just how professional your content can look.
